Jessica Fayne from Goddard Space Flight Center was selected as the Fall 2016 DEVELOPer of the term by her center lead and the national program office due to her incredible and voluntary contributions to the program. Center Lead Sean McCartney nominated Jessica due to her continually demonstrated passion for scientific research and her outstanding collaboration with peers and scientific advisors. Annual Earth Science Applications Showcase DEVELOP hosted the Annual Earth Science Applications Showcase at NASA Headquarters on August 10th. 30 projects were featured highlighting the applications of NASA Earth science data for environmental decision making around the globe. Congratulations to Priscilla Addison and Maya Midzic for being selected as a DEVELOPers of the Term. Priscilla was a member of the Easter Idaho Disasters Team at the BLM at Idaho State University. In celebration of the National Park Service Centennial in 2016, DEVELOP partnered with NPS to use NASA Earth observations to monitor change and threats to America's national parks and inventory and monitoring networks. On August 9th, DEVELOP presented a poster session at the DOI building in Washington DC. Congratulations NPS on 100 years of excellence!
DEVELOP and the Embassy of Costa Rica to the United States collaborated on two summer projects applying NASA Earth observations to enhance water management in Costa Rica. These projects culminated in presentation at the Embassy of Costa Rica in Washington DC on August 9th where the teams discussed their project results and experience working with DEVELOP. This summer, Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) selected three participants to receive scholarships: Jared Tomlin from Goddard, Rachel Cabosky from Langley and Daryl Ann Winstead from Marshall. Congratulations to the Lake Victoria Water Resources II team for winning the spring VPS contest! Their project looked at water hyacinth and how it negatively effects the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria. This term's runner-up is the NCEI Levant and Central America Climate team, who utilized NASA and NOAA Earth observations to analyze vegetation patterns as related to various climatic events.

The 2016 Spring VPS is live on Earthzine. 108 particpants worked on 26 projects this Spring to develop these videos. The VPS contest will run through May 6th, with the first round ending April 15th, and the second round going from April 22nd through April 29th. In addition to content the videos are judged on the participants replies to comments left on the Earthzine site, so make sure to leave some good, challengeing comments for them!
Congratulations to Ryan Umberger, this Springs DEVELOPer of the Term. Ryan Umberger walked in the Wise County node unannounced during orientation on Day 1 of the term, having been sent to the node by a UVA-Wise astronomy professor just a few minutes earlier. Since that day he has been the ideal volunteer participant in the DEVELOP office. He came into the program with little working knowledge of GIS or remote sensing, and little in the way of an Earth science background. Ryan enthusiastically dug into the literature, GIS programs, and coding necessary for the project. He was a tremendous asset to the African Great Lakes Weather II team, the node, and DEVELOP as a whole. Ryan was instrumental in the drafting of all deliverables, including the production of a very polished VPS video.

This term, three participants were selected to receive scholarships from SSAI: Grant Mercer from the DEVELOP Langley office, Sara Amirazodi from the DEVELOP Marshall office, and Rodrigo Pereira da Silva from the DEVELOP Mobile County office. All three provided unique skills to the program and were selected for their enthusiasm, passion for their work, and overall contribution to the program. Congratulations to Grant, Sara, and Rodrigo!

DEVELOP shared the summer project portfolio at NASA HQ on July 30. It was a very successful event, including 38 posters, 13 flash talks, 8 flat screen demonstrations, 6 highlight presentations, and an end-user and partner panel discussion. Many leaders from NASA HQ stopped by for support, and remarks were given by John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate; Michael Freilich, Earth Science Division Director; Lawrence Friedl, Director of the Applied Sciences Program; and Nancy Searby, Capacity Building Program Manager.
