The 1999 DEVELOP team goal was to create a virtual, three-dimensional model of the Earth's atmosphere, accessible to anyone via internet. One would have the opportunity to view any place at any point in history. This "Digital Earth" would compile thousands of satellite images, making them readily available to the public for the first time.
To make "Digital Earth" a more authentic experience, the DEVELOP team created an immersive virtual reality system. This system was constructed of a head-mounted display unit, stereo video goggles, headphones, and a motion tracking device. Through this high-tech simulator, users could interact with the virtual world.
Students served the community further through the Air Pollution Project for Learning and Education, or APPLE. APPLE was a computer program designed to test how different weather conditions could affect a city. APPLE also included a website offering information on air pollution.
